Mattessons Pork – Gorilla Classics # 1

Wanted to start posts of 'Gorilla classics', so without further to do, here's the first one.

The shape of the product is totally unique, and therefore the end shot could not have been used for any other product. Couldn't be 'Ford, You know you want it'. Couldn't be 'Tampax, You know you want it'. It was uniquely Mattesons, and therefore something pretty special and deserving of being the first post in the Gorilla Classics.

A related Youtube video turned out to be a totall pis* take, apparently someone thought it would be funny to get two teenage girls to deepthroat a sausage and mock Mattesons.

Got to say I didn't laugh, great sense of humour girls, but I guess that's the catch with having user generated content online. The whole magic of the original ad was the subtlety, yes there are undertones but it's dealt with maturely whereas the girls advert with the double ended sausage fellation does nothing to A. Increase the integrity of the brand or B. Say anything true about the product.

Anyone know who did the original spot?

Hey RustE, I was wondering which company (sorry, not 'who'–I'm sure it was probably a big team effort) did the Mattessons advertisement, Any developments / info much appreciated

I checked out your blog and it's brilliant, got to recommend it to all the other readers out there – Rusty's blog is full of great insights and thoughts and a cool profile pic too! Your dinosaur pic makes my gorilla look a bit too AD! Is the green dinosaur licking his lips because he loves bourbons?

Thanks for stopping by and visiting my blog, great to meet new people

To be honest both are exactly what that bloody sausage looks and tastes like, CRAP!

U shaped or not, telling I want something is not a good way to actually sell it. People don't like being told they like/want/need stuff, they like to do that bit for themselves, that's how they don't feel like they are actually in the oppressive, corporate world they actually are.

The second video is a great piss take. Doesn't look like it was even done with an ad spoof in mind, just a evening cocking about (quite literally).

I wouldn't lose sleep over who did the original spot, people who deal with things "maturely" are missing the fun bit of advertising!

I agree with you, except the other way around. But thanks for your opinion

I find it pretty interesting, and possibly testament to the success of the advertising campaign that you know what the product tastes like. Now if the advert made you go out and buy the product it worked, simple really. Beautiful almost...

All great points, and true. But the fact that the advert bases itself on a product truth can't be ignored? The shape is literally screaming out that 'U know you want it'

And it is really tasty, so something simple like 'mmm' just works.

But I guess you're right, it's not worth losing sleep over! Unless the lack of sleep was due to a midnight feast of Mattessons...

Oh, just realised I referred to the post made at 00:02 as just that, a number. Apologies for not referring to you by name, that was really bad of me and I don't want to make a habit of it.

Great to meet you ]-[appy Thought, and look forward to talking again soon I hope

I'm happy to ignore it. Product truths are only interesting if the truth is interesting. And most 'wurst' style sausages are this kind of U shape so it's hardly original in the same was a pretzel is. By the same reasoning you could say that Ford could market their cars on the truth that they have wheels, but that would be seen as lazy. IMO the fact it also looks like the meaty phallus of the food kingdom makes the 2nd vid a better insight! Even if the execution is then somewhat obvious.

Oh, and bless you for bothering to type my name right. Welcome to the bLogosphere.

You raise some good points, thanks. I never thought of the second video like that, perhaps thats a good thing about the sausage meat.

I kept on thinking the word was bLoglobe, but its bLogosphere! Thanks for reminding me ]-[appy thought

I hate 'the man' as much as the next man (not the next 'the man') but im not sure i agree with the idea that we dont like being told what to do. Ever since i saw 'just do it', i just havent stopped doing it.

The real mattessons ad is perrretty good. The 2nd one not so much.

ps- this blog is nice
